Driving

We recommend drivers approach the University from the junction of the A64 and A1079 on the east of the city, from where the University is signposted.

Parking

Visitor parking is on a pay and display basis (see the interactive campus map for locations). Parking costs £1 per hour or £6 per day, and is free at weekends and between 6pm and 8am. You can pay using coins or with a mobile phone using RingGo Cashless Parking.

There are disabled parking spaces in all University car parks.

By Air

London Heathrow
  • From Heathrow airport take the Piccadilly Line on the London Underground (Tube) to King’s Cross St. Pancras tube station (travelling towards Cockfosters station). The Piccadilly Line is dark blue on a London Underground map.
  • Underground trains leave Heathrow airport every frequently. You need to buy your Underground train ticket from the ticket office or ticket machine before boarding the Underground train. A single fare Underground ticket to Kings Cross costs approximately £5. It takes about an hour to reach King’s Cross.
  • On reaching King’s Cross, follow the directions from the underground to the overground mainline train station.
  • At King’s Cross train station, take a direct train to York railway station, which costs about £30 (up to £120 on the day of travel), and takes approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. Book online through Virgin Trains.
Manchester
  • Manchester airport railway station is in the centre of the airport complex.
  • At Manchester airport follow the signs for The Station.
  • Once at The Station go to the ticket office and buy a single ticket to York (or book online on Virgin Trains). A direct train runs every half an hour and costs from approximately £11 up to £30. The train will take approximately one hour and 50 minutes.
Leeds Bradford
  • Use the First 757 bus service from Leeds Bradford airport to get to Leeds bus station or Leeds train station. The 757 bus operates up to every half hour (hourly in the evenings) and costs approximately £3. Timetable and further information is on the Metro website.
  • From Leeds train station, the train to York runs several times an hour, takes about 30 minutes and costs around £12. Find fares and times online on National Rail website.
  • Alternatively, use one of many Coastliner buses to travel from Leeds bus station to York train station. The bus takes around one hour and costs about £6. Timetable and further information is on the York Bus website.
Newcastle
  • The Metro Station is directly linked to the terminal building by a covered walkway.
  • Single Metro tickets to Newcastle Central railway station cost around £3 and are valid for 90 minutes from the time of purchase. A ticket can be bought at any of the ticket machines located on the Metro station. Students should select Zone 3 on the ticket panel of the machines.
  • The Metro train to Newcastle Central railway station leaves the airport every 7 minutes. The journey takes about 23 minutes.
  • At Newcastle Central railway station go to the ticket office and ask to buy a single ticket to York. An open, single train ticket from Newcastle Central to York costs approximately £26.
London Gatwick

From London Gatwick airport to London St. Pancras train station

  • If you arrive at Gatwick North Terminal, take the free Inter-Terminal shuttle train to Gatwick South Terminal which runs every three minutes. Gatwick South Terminal is directly linked to Gatwick railway station.
  • Once at the train station, buy a single ticket for approximately £10 to London St. Pancras railway station. The train runs every 15 minutes and takes around 47 minutes to get to London St. Pancras station.
 From London St. Pancras to York
  • Walk the short distance to the main King’s Cross railway station directly across the road, which takes around 2 minutes.
  • Take a direct train to York railway station, which costs about £30 (up to £120 on the day of travel), and takes approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. Book online through Virgin Trains.
London Stansted

From Stansted airport to York railway station 

  • Stansted airport train station is located underneath the airport terminal building. There are two routes from Stansted airport to York – one route will take you via London and the other route will take you via Peterborough.

Route 1 (via London)

  • At Stansted airport train station go to the ticket office and ask to buy a single ticket to York via London King’s Cross. A weekday standard open single ticket costs approximately £120. With this ticket you are able to travel from King’s Cross to York on any National Express East Coast train including during peak time (3pm – 7pm).
  • Take the Stansted Express train from Stansted to London Liverpool Street station – the journey will take approximately 45 minutes. From Liverpool Street station take the London Underground (Tube) to King’s Cross.
  • Travel from Liverpool Street to King’s Cross takes approximately eight minutes. Using a London Underground map, you can travel on either the:
    • Pink Hammersmith and City Line
    • Or yellow Circle Line
    • Or purple Metropolitan Line (towards Uxbridge)
  • From King’s Cross railway station take a direct train to York. Trains to York leave King’s Cross often.The journey from London to York takes on average two and a half hours.

Route 2 (via Peterborough)

  • At Stansted airport train station go to the ticket office and ask to buy a single ticket to York via Ely. A weekday standard open single ticket costs approximately £72 but you must travel through Ely.
  • Take the Crosscountry service from Stansted airport to Peterborough. At Peterborough station change trains and take the National Express East Coast train to York. The train journey from Stansted to York takes approximately three hours.
London Luton

From London Luton airport to London St. Pancras train station

  • There is a shuttle bus going from the airport to Luton Airport Parkway station. A single ticket costs £1.50 and can be purchased on the bus. The bus runs every 10 minutes from 5am until midnight and will take you to Luton Airport Parkway train station in approximately 5 minutes.
  • Take a direct train from London Luton Parkway station to London St. Pancras train station which takes about 35 minutes, costs around £14.00 and runs approximately every 15 minutes. Book online on National Rail website.

From London St. Pancras to York railway station

  • Walk the short distance to the main King’s Cross railway station, which takes around 2 minutes.
  • Take a direct train to York railway station, which costs about £30 (up to £120 on the day of travel), and takes approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. Book online through Virgin Trains.

 

By Rail

 

There is a frequent, fast train service to York on the main East Coast Line from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh. There is also a direct service between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport.

The University is a short bus or taxi ride direct from the railway station.

Bus Services

There are buses from the city centre and railway station approximately every 5 minutes during the day, and it takes around 20 minutes to reach the campus.

The UoY66 service runs from York railway station to Campus West and Campus East, via the city centre. To find the bus stop, exit the railway station through the main entrance and cross the zebra crossing directly in front of you to exit the covered area. Once you are outside, cross a second zebra crossing to a small island where you can catch the UoY66 bus to campus.

The ub.1 is a dedicated free shuttle bus service for travel around the main University campus during term-time. The UoY66 also provides free travel around Campus East and West.

You can reach York by coach from many destinations around the country. National Express coaches stop at the railway station.

Taxi Servies

A taxi from the railway station to the University will take approximately 15 minutes. There is a taxi rank just outside the station. It can often be just as quick, and significantly cheaper, to take a bus. The bus stop is located outside the main station entrance.
